Slightly non-objective, slightly non-representation, and hopefully slightly abstract.
I’m always looking for something new to challenge me in my work. I’ve always wanted to try painting in non-objective abstract painting. But I’ll be the first to admit that I just didn’t get abstract painting. What the heck is that? And what are all those wiggly things? And of course, the all time favorite, “A five-year-old could paint that!”
But every now and then you’ll see an abstract that is breathtaking. But I still didn’t get it.
So I started asking every artist I knew and some I didn’t, “What is abstract painting?” What are you trying to accomplish? How do I start? Finally, I got my answer. Paint something that wow’s you. If it’s light, incorporate that into something that pleases you. You are still following the same principles as representational painting. Value, color, lost and found edges, warm and cool colors, and don’t forget that focal point.
So I have been experimenting. It’s a lot harder than I thought. And I seem to not want to let go of something identifiable in my new paintings. But it’s great fun. My husband and I recently went on a trip out west. Like every other artist who has been there, I fell in love with all of it.
We drove through five eco-systems. From high mountains to high desert, plains, valley floor, then back up to Alpine. And all of it was incredible. I went a little nuts with my digital camera.
So I’m giving non-objective, non-representational, and slightly abstract my best shot.
